Athletic Academic Services
The Office of Athletic Academic Services serves over 400 scholarship and walk-on student-athletes. The staff consists of four professional staff members, tutors, a certification officer and mentor staff members. Athletic Academic Services serves Texas State University student-athletes by focusing on the following three areas:
Supplying student-athletes with a positive academic experience
Preparing student-athletes for life after sports
Providing academic support programs
To do this, the AAC offers various support and recognition programs that are divided into four main areas:
1. Student Services
-
Early Registration
All student-athletes are able to register on the first day of early registration regardless of class standing.
Academic Advising & Counseling
The academic advisors in our office are here to assist you in preparing a schedule that will comply with your degree, work with your practice schedule, and fit into your world as a college student.
Personal Counseling
If there are any problems that need to be dealt with by professionals, the academic advisors have resources to help in any situation.
New Student-Athlete Orientation
Orientation is a meeting held early in the semester. Student-Athletes are required to attend if you are a new freshman or transfer student-athlete. Major topics that you must be informed about will be discussed.
NCAA Big 12 Certification
The certification process is not easy, but staff members work diligently to check and double-check until we know your eligibility and certification status is 100%.
2. Academic Support
-
Study Hall
Study Hall is a great opportunity for you to excel as a student. All student-athletes are required to attend study hall each week based upon the coaching staff for your sport.
Tutorial Support
Tutoring is offered in several different ways through the AAC and the other campus resources. The AAC offers drop in tutoring for Math and assigned tutoring for other subjects. Student-athletes are also encouraged to seek assistance in the Student Learning Assistance Center (SLAC) in the Alkek Library and in the Disability Services Office.
Academic Tracking Program
Class checks and personal, need-based meetings with academic counselors occur to monitor academic success. Three times during the semester, grade checks are sent to professors to assess academic progress.
Computer Resources
Within the Athletic Academic Center is the student-athlete computer lab. When traveling, student-athletes have the opportunity to check out a laptop computer for use on the road.
Mentor Guidance
The AAC is involved with every aspect of a student-athlete's academic life while at Texas State. This relationship begins during the recruiting process, followed by new student orientation (PAWS Preview) and continuing on with the Academic Mentoring Program. The Academic Mentoring Program is designed as a mentor program to assist freshman, transfer and at-risk student-athletes. Each student on the mentoring program is assigned a mentor in the AAC who they meet with on a regular basis throughout the semester. The mentoring program requires that each student-athlete complete at least six hours of study time each week in the Athletic Academic Center.
Travel Support
When ever you are traveling for competition, we provide you with excuse letters for your professors as well as support in making arrangements for makeup tests or taking tests on the road.
3. Retention, Recruitment, & Recognition
-
On-Campus Recruitment
On-campus visits are for us to show you why we love Texas State. It is an opportunity to get a feel for our friendly community and ask what it's like to be a Bobcat.
Student-Athlete Handbook
This handbook is a resource for you. It is full of useful information about the Athletic Department family. There is a handy day planner to help with time management, too.
Academic Awards Program
Numerous academic awards are available every year. To be nominated by your academic counselor, you must meet various requirements for each award program.
Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC)
Student-Athlete Advisory Council (S.A.A.C.) is a group of Texas State student-athletes who are considered the leaders on their respective teams. This group meets monthly to help plan community service events and special programs as well as serve as a voice of the student-athlete to the Texas State Athletic Department. The group consists of two representatives from each sport.
NCAA Life Skills
This encompasses the freshman Life Skills class, the Read with the 'Cats Program, community outreach activities, and career planning and development that make a student-athlete a well-rounded individual.
4. Career Planning & Placement
-
Career Services Center
Student-athletes are encouraged to work with a career services counselor and to utilize the Career Service Center when deciding on a major, writing a resume or looking for internships and summer jobs. Career workshops for student-athletes are provided during the spring semester. The Career Services Center helps students in preparing for interviews by working on interviewing skills and etiquette. The Career Center is equipped with a computer lab and numerous books to help students with all aspects of career development and exploration.
Resume & Interview Workshop
This is an opportunity for upperclassmen to have resumes proofed by professional career counselors, and gain insight on how to conduct yourself in an interview.
Career Information
An annual career fair is held to enable student-athletes to showcase their talent as a professional, skilled worker.
