With Texas State's commitment to improve and upgrade its athletic facilities, the focus of the athletic facility campaign shifts to the diamonds. The Bobcat baseball and softball programs have brought regional and national exposure to Texas State in recent seasons. Their success has aligned them among the Southland Conference's premier programs in their respective sports. For this upward spiral to continue, long-term facility enhancements are a necessity.
Priorities for these facilities include a baseball/softball office complex, the installation of additional bleachers to enclose the park at baseball, a roof over the chair back seats at both stadiums and a covered indoor batting facility for both sports to provide an alternative to inclement weather.
A baseball/softball on-site complex would include: locker rooms for baseball and softball, coaches' offices, an umpire dressing room, a player lounge, training room, concession stand, and laundry facilities.
PHASE I COMPLETED
A new playing surface greeted the Bobcats at both the softball and baseball fields as Phase I of the improvements to the baseball/softball complex were completed in 2006.
Phase I's main focus was getting the teams back on the field in less time after bouts with bad weather. Before, both Bobcat squads were losing time on the practice and game fields due to rain, but two of Phase I's main components aim to curb that problem.
The fields were re-graded, which keeps water from standing on the field, and unlike the previous surface, the new playing surface has a slight crown that will move water off of the surface quickly. The crown will result in a raised playing surface, which includes brand new infield and warning-track material as well.
A sub-drainage system was also added, which consists of two parts. First, a gutter-like system will move water into drains, much like piping underneath the playing field. In addition, an eight-inch sand layer went underneath the playing surface to allow water to drain easily from the field.
A newer, more modern irrigation system was also installed, along with a new playing surface that consists of Bermuda 419 grass. The Bermuda is intended to look better from afar and provides a more consistent playing field.
Along with a better looking and more consistent field, upkeep and maintenance is now much easier.
The improvements to the facilities will give Bobcat players a top-notch playing field that will reduce the time spent off the field due to weather. In addition, the more consistent playing surface will result in fewer injuries on the field.
PHASE II
Phase II of the renovations to the baseball/softball complex is scheduled to begin upon the completion of the 2008 seasons. Phase II will look at reconfiguring grandstands at both facilities wrap around the diamond and raise seating capacity to 2,000 for baseball and 1,000 for softball. Phase II will also come with a new press box for each field, centralized ticket operations, renovated restroom facilities, and luxury suites. Finally, additional improvements include changes to the player holding area to a dugout style seen at most major league ball parks and inclosing both ballparks to be one complex.
Construction is projected to begin in Fall 2008 and be completed by the start of the 2009 baseball and softball seasons.
Bobcat Baseball/Softball Complex Parking
Parking is available for visitors in lots AZ-9 & AZ-10W for special events and games. Visitors attending events at the Bobcat Baseball/Softball Complex during normal business hours should obtain a parking pass from the event coordinator or Texas State Parking Services. Day visitors on official business may park in visitor lot located off of Charles Austin Drive directly in front of the complex.
From I-35 North (Austin)
Take I-35 South toward San Marcos, TX. Exit Aquarena Springs Drive (Exit 206) and take right. Turn left on Charles Austin Drive. The Baseball/Softball complex will be on your left hand side about a half block down.
From I-35 South (San Antonio)
