It is that time of year where the sports seasons transition from the fall sports to hoop season.

Texas State’s football team plays its final game of the 2006 season in Huntsville as the Bobcats take on Sam Houston State. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.

The Bobcat Athletic Foundation is sponsoring a bus trip, leaving San Marcos at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. Tickets are $40.00 which includes transportation, game ticket and snacks.

David Bailiff and the football program received tremendous news last week, as five players were selected to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA District VI All-Academic Team. Representing Texas State for the second straight year on the team is Walter Musgrove. Joining Musgrove on the all-academic team released last week are teammates Blake Burton, Buck Koalenz, Nate Langford and Chase Wasson.

The Academic All-District VI University Division Team is made up of 24 student-athletes representing NCAA Division I institutions located in the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. The team was selected by the district membership of the College Sports Information Directors of America.

In addition to leading the District VI team, Texas State’s five district picks were the most by any school in the nation. Harvard University placed four student-athletes on the District I University Division Team while Ohio State University was represented by four student-athletes on the District IV University Division First-Team.

Texas State's five all-district student-athletes will be placed on the Academic All-America ballot.

The Bobcat volleyball team finished the year with a 10-6 SLC record and enters this week’s Southland Conference Tournament as the fifth seed. Texas State will open defense of its back-to-back conference tournament championships Friday when they take on host Texas-San Antonio. The match begins at 6:30 p.m. in UTSA’s Convocation Center.

The two teams split during the regular season, both winning at home. I am very confident that Karen Chisum will have her team ready to play this weekend as the tournament gets underway.

Our soccer team finished fifth in the SLC regular season and hosted the SLC championships in San Marcos earlier this month.

In the first round, the Bobcats knocked off Northwestern State 1-0. Another exciting match took place in the semifinals as the ‘Cats downed No. 1 seed Southeastern Louisiana 2-1 in overtime. On Championship Sunday, the Bobcats battled No. 6 seed McNeese to the finish but fell short in a 1-0 loss. Coach Conner will have to regroup for next season with the loss of nine seniors from this year’s squad.

Both basketball teams hosted and won their exhibition games last week in final tune-ups for the 2006-2007 season on the hardwood.

Doug Davalos began his career with a 106-93 win over Dallas Baptist in the Bobcats regular-season opener last week. Coach Davalos’s team actually scored 106 points in two games last week, also hitting the century mark in an exhibition win over Texas Lutheran.

After having a comeback on the road at Centenary fall short earlier this week, Texas State is at Texas-Pan American on Saturday. The team’s next home game is next Wednesday when they take on Arkansas-Little Rock.

In recruiting news, the men’s team probably just signed the best class in Southland Conference history, with four signees recognized as top 40 players in the State of Texas by Texas Hoops Magazine. The coaching staff also landed an outstanding junior college shooting guard from Georgia. The future looks bright for Bobcat Basketball!

The women's team just completed three games in Austin at the Traveler’s Classic, hosted by the University of Texas. The ladies finished 1-2 in the tournament with losses to Louisiana-Lafayette and Texas and a win against Maryland-Eastern Shore.

In the Texas game, the Bobcats trailed by only ten points with four minutes remaining, and played hard down the stretch.

The Bobcat women will play this Saturday at Texas Tech before returning home for the CenturyTel Classic on Thanksgiving weekend against Texas-Pan American and Missouri-Kansas City. A complete schedule for the classic is posted here on the site.
