First, I want to say I think you are doing a fantastic job as Athletic Director for Texas State University-San Marcos. Texas State has pride that it didn’t have before you arrived. Now, what do I need to do as an alum to continue our progress? – Scott in Houston

Scott, thank you for your continued support. As with every department on the Texas State campus, we’re making strides each every day and our alumni is a big part of that. When it comes to helping continue the progress of the program, there are so many things our alumni can do to become involved. This Saturday, the men’s basketball team travels to Sam Houston State for a 7 p.m. game. I know the team would love to have the support of all our alumni who could make the short drive from the Houston metro area to Huntsville. Also, get back to campus when you can. There’s nothing like supporting the Bobcats in our house, no matter if that is Bobcat Stadium, Strahan Coliseum or Bobcat Field. We ask our fans to wear maroon and gold. Our university and athletic department marks are distinctive. Our alumni, students, faculty and fans are very prideful and wearing Texas State apparel is a great way to show that pride. Finally, we would welcome you becoming involved in our athletic foundation. It’s a great way to meet folks who are just excited as you when it comes to our athletic program and its future.

I have heard there is no interest in moving up to DI-A. What’s the deal? - Anonymous

Collegiate football continues to evolve and we are committed to having a successful program. Since making the move to Division I-AA in 1984, Texas State has had just five winning seasons in 23 years. The 2005 season marked the team’s first conference championship since making the move to Division I and also the first time in 23 seasons we advanced to the playoffs. We have now set season attendance records in back-to-back years. However, we still need to produce a consistent winner on the field and in the stands. Stadium expansion is a part of our capital campaign. We will let alumni and fans determine if that is a necessity.

On a side note, effective Dec. 15, the NCAA eliminated the traditional Division I-A and I-AA football subdivisional labels as we have grown accustomed to over the years. The NCAA now acknowledges the former I-A subgroup as the “Football Bowl Subdivision” or “FBS” and I-AA institutions are now known as the “NCAA Football Championship Subdivision” or “FCS.” The NCAA made the change to acknowledge football played at this level is Division I. The new names also better describe the differences in Division I governance and postseason football opportunities. The monikers will also eliminate the erroneous use of “I-AA” or “I-A” to describe other sports which are simply Division I.

The Texas State Open meet on March 10th, is this an “all comers” event? – Dave, Chandler, Ariz.

Dave, the March 10th meet at Texas State is an “all comers” event and more information can be received by contacting the track and field office. You can email assistant coach Chris Adams at ca1159@txstate.edu for additional details.

Now that Coach Wright is on the recruiting trail, can we get updates on how things are going? – Ben, Arlington

Ben, per NCAA guidelines, we are not allowed to talk about specific student-athletes who are being recruited by any of our programs. For football and soccer, the national signing period begins Feb. 7. Our media relations staff will work with both programs to release the information to media as well as post details on our web site as soon as our future student-athletes sign their letters-of-intent.
