San Marcos, Texas- - The Texas State men's and women's track and field teams opened their outdoor schedule in impressive fashion as the Bobcats combined to win 10 events at its own Texas State Open that was held at the Jim Wacker Field Friday night.

Heading the list of winners were Rebekah Vickers and Kemuel Morales, who both posted NCAA Regional qualifying marks. Vickers won the women's pole vault after clearing a career-best 3.85 meters as she edged teammate Jannah Evans, who was the runner-up after she posted a vault of 3.55 meters.

Morales won the men's shot put with a mark of 16.80 meters. He also finished fifth in the men's discus with a throw of 46.45 meters.

Texas State also had the top two finishers in the men's long jump as Jonathan Williams won the event with a leap of 6.83 meters. He edged teammate Erick Thomas, who had a jump of 6.75 meters. Williams also had a fourth-place finish in the men's triple jump with a mark of 14.00 meters.

Valerie Hancock just missed qualifying for the NCAA Regional Championships in the women's high jump when she won the event after clearing 1.70 meters, five centimeters shy of the regional qualifying mark.

Giovanna Martinez won the women's hammer with a throw of 46.39 meters, while Kelli Van Vleet won the javelin with mark of 40.16 meters.

In the running events, Iris Darrington won the women's 200-meter dash with a time of 24.74 seconds after finishing third in the 100 meters in 12.32 seconds.

Liat Anav won the women's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.84 and teamed with Amanda Rodriguez, Cara Forrest and Mary Beth O'Connor to win the women's 4x400-meter relay in a time of 3:58.88.

 

 

Texas State also won the men's 4x400-meter relay in the final event of the day as Adam Higginbotham, Justin Longoria, Gerry Harris and Gerry Kammer combined for a time of 3:16.57. Harris had the fastest leg for the Bobcats with a time of 47.1 seconds.

Texas State continues its outdoor campaign when the Bobcats travel to San Antonio for the UTSA Relays on Mar. 14-15.
