Men's Basketball Holds Annual Awards Banquet

SAN MARCOS - The Texas State Bobcat basketball program held its annual awards banquet Monday night, highlighting the 2007-2008 season and its three senior members. The program achieved more overall and Southland Conference wins, concluding the season with a 13-16 overall record and 6-10 in league play. Seniors Matt Fullenwider, Brandon Thomas and Brent Holder were honored for their career achievements at Texas State. Fullenwider averaged seven points and three rebounds in his two years with the Bobcats. The forward shot 41 percent from three-point range, including a 48 percent outing this season. Fullenwider earned two letters and will receive a degree in Psychology with a minor in Biology. Thomas averaged 6.5points and five rebounds in his career at Texas State, shooting 50 percent from the field. The guard led the team in rebounding 18 times over his two-year stint, including a career-high 18-point 15-rebound performance against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi this season. Thomas served as the senior captain of the team and earned two letters. He will graduate in May with a degree in Exercise and Sports Science. Holder concluded his two seasons with the Bobcats averaging eight points and three rebounds. The shooting guard made over 100 three-pointers in just two years, shooting 36 percent from beyond the arc. Holder led the team in scoring six times in his career, including his final game with Texas State, a 20-point outing over Texas-Arlington. Holder earned two letters and will receive a degree in Communications Studies with minors in Business and Mass Communication. John Rybak was awarded the Bobcat Award for his consistent attitude and efforts throughout the season. Rybak sat out this season to fulfill transfer requirements, but will be an instrumental player for the Bobcats next season. Thomas and Brandon Bush shared the Jeff Foster Award for their combined defensive efforts on the court. The pair led the team in defensive scoring, deflections, blocks, steals and charges. Corey Jefferson received the Rudy Davalos Award for being this seasons "playmaker." Jefferson was considered the defensive and offensive catalyst for the program and served as co-Captain of the team.
Bush was presented with the Lewis Gilcrease Award and named the team's Most Valuable Player. The guard led the team in scoring and rebounding with 14.6 and seven, respectively. He recorded 22 double-figure outing and a career-high six double-doubles this season. The Vernon McDonald Award was presented to Thomas for his spirit, loyalty and leadership for the program. Brent Benson received the Jack Worthington Sixth Man Award in honor of Worthington's quintessential teammate talent. Benson came off the bench in all but one game and led the team in scoring eight times. This was the first year the Jack Worthington award was given. |
