Steve Irvin enters his first season as the defensive backs coach at Texas State University after serving as an assistant coach at College of the Desert in Palm Springs in 2007, when the Roadrunners posted a 9-1 regular season record, won a conference co-championship and advanced to the state playoffs for the first time in school history when they played Bakersfield in the Golden Empire Bowl. The College of the Desert also ranked second in total defense in conference play as well.
Irvin returned to the College of the Desert last season. He also was an assistant coach from 1999-2000, serving as defensive coordinator in 2001. In addition to his coaching duties, he was an instructional support assistant in the Physical Education Department in 2001-02.
He went to the College of the Desert in 2007 after serving as an assistant secondary coach at Montana State for one year and as the assistant director of football operations at San Diego State in 2004-06. Irvin also was a graduate assistant coach at San Diego State in 2002-03
Irvin earned a master's degree from San Diego State in 2004 and a bachelor's degree at UNLV in 1999 after a two-year career as an outside linebacker (1997-98). A native of Las Vegas, Irvin began his collegiate career at Quincy University (1996-97) and College of the Desert (1994-96).
