With a wealth of knowledge about Texas State's defensive package, Rick LaFavers became a member of the Bobcat coaching staff earlier this year. LaFavers began coaching Texas State's linebacking corps during spring drills and is set for his first fall with the `Cats.

At Texas State, he is responsible for recruiting the Dallas ISD plus Richardson, Garland, Mesquite and Grand Pairie along with Northeast Texas. He will also recruit Oklahoma and Kansas junior colleges.

LaFavers joined the Texas State staff from Texas A&M where he was the team's head strength and conditioning coach the past three years. Prior to his tenure at A&M, he worked two seasons as a defensive graduate assistant (2001-02) for head coach Dennis Franchione at Alabama.

LaFavers' first collegiate coaching position came at TCU where he also served as a defensive graduate assistant. As a member of the coaching staff at his alma mater and under current Horned Frog head coach Gary Patterson, LaFavers gained a defensive comprehension of the same system Texas State utilizes. Texas State defensive coordinator Craig Naivar and defensive line coach Kyle Tietz were also on TCU coaching staffs with Patterson.

During his career, LaFavers has been on the coaching staffs of four teams which have advanced to bowl games. He was a member of the TCU coaching staff when the Horned Frogs advanced to the Sun Bowl (1998) as well as made consecutive appearances in the Mobile Alabama Bowl (1999-2000). He was also a member of Alabama's staff in 2001 when the Crimson Tide played in the Independence Bowl. Alabama had the best record in the SEC West in 2002.

Besides his collegiate coaching experience, LaFavers was a member of Fort Worth Southwest High School's coaching staff in 1997.

The Amarillo native was a four-year letterman for the Horned Frogs at defensive back. He was named a team captain as a senior in 1995, compiling 70 tackles and intercepting a pair of passes. He was named All-Southwest Conference Second Team in 1995. LaFavers was a member of TCU's Co-SWC championship team which advanced to the Independence Bowl his junior year.

In addition to earning his bachelor's degree in physical education from TCU in 1997, LaFavers earned his master's degree in liberal arts from TCU in 2000.

LaFavers is married to the former Kim Dooley and the couple has two sons, Austin Joseph (three) and Coleson Joshua who was born in February.
