Dec. 21, 2007
FRISCO - After recently being one of two Southland Conference student-athletes named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American list, Texas State's Nick Clark has been voted the Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Year in football. The student-athlete of the year is annually presented to the individual in each conference sport who achieves excellence in academics and athletics. Nominees shall have earned at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average to go along with superior athletics achievement. In addition, Clark is one of 26 student-athletes named to the 2007 Capital One/SLC All-Academic Football Team. The selection is the third for the six-foot, 253-pound defensive lineman from Fort Worth, Texas. Clark posted the second highest grade point average on the 2007 All-Academic team with his 3.76 average in his mathematics major. Teammate Travis Houston, a linebacker, edged Clark with a 3.81 cumulative mark in computer information systems during his sophomore season. Clark joined McNeese State defensive back Brant Linde as the only players from Southland Conference schools named to the CoSIDA/ESPN teams, while Clark is also one of only four players from the state of Texas to earn Academic All-America honors in the university division, which includes players from all FCS and FBC subdivision teams. Linde, a junior defensive back with a 3.73 gpa in accounting, picked up his third SLC All-Academic award as well. On the field, Clark led the Texas State defense in tackles for loss with 9.0 while tallying the fourth highest tackle total with 53. He also registered 2.5 sacks with one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. In the classroom, Clark is continuing his education by pursuing a master's degree in physics. He joins Nate Langford and Travis Houston on the Academic All-SLC Team. Langford finished the season with 29 tackles, including 4.5 for loss, and two sacks while Houston ranked second on the Bobcats in tackles with 60 and led the team with 3.0 sacks. Houston also had an interception, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble to his credit on the year. All eight Southland universities are represented on the all-academic team.
