Getting Down to Business.
What a day! We haven't even had an on-the-field practice yet, but we are certainly keeping busy, to say the least. After our wake-up call, we went right to a team breakfast in the hotel and then headed into physicals with doctors and NFL scouts.
This morning also was our first position meeting, and Cody Hodges from Texas Tech, Brad Smith from Missouri, and I met with our head coach, Tyrone Willingham, for over an hour this morning. The first thing Coach told us is he wants to win the game, and then we got down to business.
He visited with each of us and got a feel of what we like to do so we can formulate the game plan accordingly. It was really a great experience talking football with those guys, as we all share some common ideas and also bring our own to the mix.
After lunch, we had almost four hours of psychological tests to measure our mental part of the game. Next was what some of us called the "meat market". We basically were stripped down to our underwear and paraded on stage and down the aisles in a room filled with scouts from all 32 NFL teams. The purpose is to get a first-hand look at each player's physical makeup.
Thanks to all the hard work I had with (football strength and conditioning coach) Thad Livingston back at Texas State, it gave me an edge on some of the guys who might not have worked out since the season ended.
I am writing this in the middle of a short afternoon break, and tonight we have a dinner with both teams. After that, we are on our own. My plans are pretty simple tonight - walk on the beach a little, get in the water to relax my body, and get a nice long rest to be ready for our first practice tomorrow.
I will also be taking care of my man Fred. When he came to Texas State, it was his first time out of Chicago, now he is in Hawaii, so I am going to keep him out of trouble (just kidding, Coach Bailiff!).
We have our first practice and more meetings scheduled for tomorrow. I really plan to be fresh and make a good impression in tomorrow's practice. Coach Willingham talked today about balance in playing time, but we will have to earn it.
I plan to do that.
