FOOTBALL WALK-ON POLICY NCAA
Gender equity participation level requirements impact walk-on numbers for most
men’s varsity sports. At LIMITATIONS: NCAA rules state that only 90 players can
participate during the assigned pre-season 2x days. This number (90) includes
scholarship and non scholarship student-athletes. Once school starts, Texas
State Athletic Department has capped the total roster limitation to a 110 total
for scholarship and non-scholarship student-athletes. Roster spots are awarded to
deserving individuals who are in compliance with Walk-on Procedure: A)
Texas State
Football will post a mandatory meeting to fill out a questionnaire and review
walk-on/team policies. This will be done
prior to the start of the long semester (fall / spring). B)

student-athletes who attended the meeting will be processed by >

After the
first week of the long semester (fall and spring) and after the mandatory
meeting, a try-out date will be scheduled. Try-outs will only be scheduled
after all proof of insurance, medical physicals, and compliance has been
addressed. NCAA ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY
REQUIREMENTS ·
Player must be enrolled in minimum of 12 hours per long semester in order to stay eligible (per NCAA
rules). ·
At the conclusion of each long semester, after grades have
been posted, Student-Athlete Academic Services will review your eligibility
status. Your head coach will receive an
eligibility report, along with a copy of your grades. You will then be informed if there are any
problems concerning your eligibility status. ·
All student-athletes will be certified at the end of every
semester rather than yearly. In order to remain eligible
to participate in your sport after your first academic year (or after one
season of eligibility), you must have made satisfactory progress toward a
degree. These requirements are per NCAA. These requirements are as
follows: If player entered college
IN or AFTER Fall ’03: §
Player must pass a minimum of 27 hours since the last season of competition. This must include a
minimum of 18 hours in the long
semester (fall and spring). §
Player MUST pass 6
hours in the semester prior to competition. Failure to do so will result in
academic ineligibility for that coming season. Example: must pass minimum of 6
hours in the spring for player to be eligible in the fall. §
You must declare a major no later than your fifth semester
in college. Once a major is declared,
only courses counting toward your degree program may be used for eligibility
purposes. §
At the end of a player’s 4th semester, 40% of all
hours taken must apply to degree plan. At the end of 6th semester,
60% of all hours taken must apply to degree plan. At the end of 8th
semester, 80% of all hours taken must apply to degree plan in order to complete
player’s 5th year. Ø Walk-on Players must be in good academic standing with Ø Walk-on players can not have BELOW 2.25 GPA in any academic long
semester (long semester defined as fall and spring). Ø If player has below 2.25 GPA in long semester, player will be suspended
from the roster for the next long semester regardless of cumulative GPA. Player will not have summer session to raise
GPA. Ø Player will then have to re-apply for walk-on status with the team. ·
Walk-on roster spots will be awarded on a semester by
semester basis. Once on the roster, the spot is not ensured for future
semesters. Receiving and keeping a spot on the roster is based on, but not
limited to: academic performance, on and off field conduct, and athletic
performance. ·
Any interested
prospect that has not participated in organized football during the last 2
football seasons prior to the upcoming season will be prohibited from trying
out due to injury-liability concerns (per Texas State Athletic Department). ·
Walk-on members
of the ·
If you are a walk-on, you are expected to follow these same guidelines
and understand that to be a part of this Team is an honor and a privilege. ·
Violations
of University and Team policies’ concerning one’s conduct, as well as any
situations with the Law will be dealt with by Coach Wright on a case-by-case
scenario. This could result in suspension or dismissal from the Team. ·
All
criteria and final decisions regarding walk-on roster spots will be at the
discretion of Head Coach Brad Wright. |
