TEXAS STATE

FOOTBALL

WALK-ON POLICY

NCAA Gender equity participation level requirements impact walk-on numbers for most men’s varsity sports. At Texas State, we are limited to 110 total roster spots that include both scholarship and non-scholarship student-athletes during the fall and spring semesters.

LIMITATIONS: NCAA rules state that only 90 players can participate during the assigned pre-season 2x days. This number (90) includes scholarship and non scholarship student-athletes. Once school starts, Texas State Athletic Department has capped the total roster limitation to a 110 total for scholarship and non-scholarship student-athletes.

Roster spots are awarded to deserving individuals who are in compliance with Texas State and NCAA rules and eligibility and have passed the open walk-on tryout.

Walk-on Procedure:

A)    Texas State Football will post a mandatory meeting to fill out a questionnaire and review walk-on/team policies. This will be done prior to the start of the long semester (fall / spring).

B)    After the mandatory meeting, all interested student-athletes who attended the meeting will be processed by Texas State Compliance and Academic Staffs to ensure :

NCAA ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

·        Player must be enrolled in minimum of 12 hours per long semester in order to stay eligible (per NCAA rules).

·        At the conclusion of each long semester, after grades have been posted, Student-Athlete Academic Services will review your eligibility status.  Your head coach will receive an eligibility report, along with a copy of your grades.  You will then be informed if there are any problems concerning your eligibility status.

·        All student-athletes will be certified at the end of every semester rather than yearly.

In order to remain eligible to participate in your sport after your first academic year (or after one season of eligibility), you must have made satisfactory progress toward a degree. These requirements are per NCAA.

These requirements are as follows:

If player entered college IN or AFTER Fall ’03:

§         Player must pass a minimum of 27 hours since the last season of competition. This must include a minimum of 18 hours in the long semester (fall and spring).

§         Player MUST pass 6 hours in the semester prior to competition. Failure to do so will result in academic ineligibility for that coming season. Example: must pass minimum of 6 hours in the spring for player to be eligible in the fall.

§         You must declare a major no later than your fifth semester in college.  Once a major is declared, only courses counting toward your degree program may be used for eligibility purposes.

§         At the end of a player’s 4th semester, 40% of all hours taken must apply to degree plan. At the end of 6th semester, 60% of all hours taken must apply to degree plan. At the end of 8th semester, 80% of all hours taken must apply to degree plan in order to complete player’s 5th year.

Ø     Walk-on Players must be in good academic standing with Texas State (and overall) GPA of 2.25 or better.

Ø     Walk-on players can not have BELOW 2.25 GPA in any academic long semester (long semester defined as fall and spring).

Ø     If player has below 2.25 GPA in long semester, player will be suspended from the roster for the next long semester regardless of cumulative GPA. Player will not have summer session to raise GPA.

Ø     Player will then have to re-apply for walk-on status with the team.

·        Walk-on roster spots will be awarded on a semester by semester basis. Once on the roster, the spot is not ensured for future semesters. Receiving and keeping a spot on the roster is based on, but not limited to: academic performance, on and off field conduct, and athletic performance.

·        Any interested prospect that has not participated in organized football during the last 2 football seasons prior to the upcoming season will be prohibited from trying out due to injury-liability concerns (per Texas State Athletic Department).

·        Walk-on members of the Texas State football program must adhere to all Texas State Team Policies. (See Team Policy handout) Failure to do so will result in dismissal from the team.

·        If you are a walk-on, you are expected to follow these same guidelines and understand that to be a part of this Team is an honor and a privilege.

·        Violations of University and Team policies’ concerning one’s conduct, as well as any situations with the Law will be dealt with by Coach Wright on a case-by-case scenario. This could result in suspension or dismissal from the Team.

·        All criteria and final decisions regarding walk-on roster spots will be at the discretion of Head Coach Brad Wright.
