Softball Hosts Nicholls State in Easter Weekend Series

SAN MARCOS - Texas State softball looks to stay on top of the Southland Conference standings with a three game series against Nicholls State, beginning Friday, March 21, with a doubleheader that kicks off at 5 p.m. The Bobcats (18-10, 11-1 SLC) are currently two games up on second place Stephen F. Austin the conference standings while Nicholls State (12-15, 5-4 SLC) sits in the middle of the pack. Ragan Blake and Katie Garnett have combined for 16 wins to anchor Texas State's pitching staff while also throwing six shutouts. Blake allowed only one run on Wednesday in a 3-1 win at Texas, the 12th win in Texas State's last 13 games. Solid hitting has also propelled the `Cats to the top of the standings as four Bobcat regulars are batting over .315. Kristina Tello leads the team with a .340 average and 22 runs scored while recording a hit in eight straight games, and McKenzie Baack currently has a nine-game hitting streak. Alex Newton leads Texas State with seven steals while hitting .337 and also ranking second on the team in RBIs with 18. The duo of Ryan Kos and Ali McCormack has provided the power in the lineup, combining for eight home runs and driving in 20 runs each. Kos had a two-run triple in the win over the Longhorns, and 10 of her 13 hits on the year have gone for extra bases. Nicholls State is led by Amy Thibodeaux's 10 home runs and 22 RBIs. Thibodeaux is also batting .297 while Kat Harrell and her SLC-best .487 average sets the table for the Lady Colonels' offense. Harrell has 38 hits on the season and has stolen eight bases so far this season.
Jessica Barksdale, who threw a perfect game against the Bobcats in 2007, anchors the pitching staff with a team-high 39 strikeouts but is just 2-4 with a 3.61 ERA. Audrey Wood has the best record on the Lady Colonels staff, posting a 3-1 mark with a 2.47 ERA in 34 innings.
