In four seasons, Texas State University's tennis program has continued to make strides under Tory Plunkett.
This past spring the Bobcats returned to the Southland Conference Post-Season Tournament. The Bobcats posted an 11-7 record and were the No. 5 seed at the SLC tournament.
In 2007, Plunkett coached the Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year, Ali Gulida.
This fall Plunkett begins a three-year term as an ITA Regional Committe Chair.
As a Regional Committee Chair, Plunkett will oversee at least a five-member committee which will offer input into the Fila Preseason Rankings and vote for the Top 100 singles players, Top 50 doubles teams and the Top 75 collegiate teams. Plunkett will also help determine the at-large and wild card selections for the three ITA National Tournaments.
During the Wilson/ITA Fall Regional Championships, Plunkett will work with the regional tournament director in selecting participants, seeding, overseeing the coaches meeting and tournament management of the event. She will also be involved in helping coordinate the ITA regional post-season awards.
While playing a schedule which included matches against five, nationally-ranked opponents the Bobcats posted a 7-14 overall record in 2006. But the Bobcats were 5-5 in Southland Conference play.
Plunkett brings a wealth of both collegiate and professional tennis experience to the Texas State program.
In four seasons, she has compiled a 35-43 record.
In her first season, Plunkett led the Bobcats to a 10-10 record and a 6-4 mark in Southland Conference play, good enough for a fifth-place finish in the league. The 2005 squad posted a 7-12 record during the spring Three of the team's league losses were by 4-3 scores.
Along with teaching tennis professionally, Plunkett played professionally for several years before entering the coaching ranks.
While Texas State is her first head coaching position, Plunkett has a wide-range of coaching experience and came to San Marcos very familiar with the Southland Conference.
She served as Associate Head Coach at Texas-Arlington from 1996 to 1998. She was also an assistant at UTA for the 1994 season as well as at Texas-San Antonio from 1994 to 1996.
A 1989 graduate of Texas Christian University, Plunkett was an All-America selection for the Horned Frogs in 1988. She was a two-time All-Southwest Conference selection and also named to the SWC's All-Decade Team.
Additionally, Plunkett was a two-time Gulf Star Conference champion while playing at Northwestern State (1985-86) and was named to the Gulf Star's All-Academic Team both seasons.
Plunkett has also served as a teaching professional at Willow Bend Polo and Hunt Club and worked as a camp counselor at John Benson's Tennis Camp in Colorado for five summers.
