Texas State will then take the court against the Longhorns at 6:30 p.m. or 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first match. Texas earned one of 33 at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament after earning a share of the Big 12 regular season crown for the first time in 10 years. The Longhorns are hosting first and second round matches for the 18th time and are currently 23-0 in program history in NCAA Tournament first round matches, including a win over the Bobcats in 2004.

New Mexico State (24-4, 14-2 WAC) also gained an at-large bid to the tournament after finishing in second place in the Western Athletic Conference. LSU (24-7, 15-5 SEC) earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament after finishing atop the Southeastern Conference's western division. The Tigers were also part of the 2005 sub-regional in Austin that featured Texas State, Texas and Hawaii.
